The richest reef biodiversity ever recorded. It is not marketing.

Surveys keep putting Raja Ampat at the top for reef fish and coral species count, and diving it feels like that number is real — the reef is simply thicker than elsewhere. Cape Kri, Blue Magic and Manta Sandy are the names people repeat, but the quiet dives between them are what tend to stay with you. Most boats are traditional phinisi schooners, wooden and beautiful, which is part of why Indonesia costs what it costs.

When to go

Highlighted months are when the diving is worth the airfare. Outside them, boats either do not sail or the conditions stop justifying the trip.

Before you book

Getting there is two or three flights and often an overnight in Sorong. Budget two travel days on each end.
