The Similans run granite boulder swim-throughs and soft-coral pinnacles in warm, generally calm water, with Richelieu Rock as the marquee site for whale shark and manta chances. Trips are short — four to six nights — which makes Thailand the cheapest realistic way to find out whether liveaboard life suits you before committing to a week in the Pacific.
