Maldives

Channel diving with big animals, on boats built for comfort.

The Maldives is drift diving in channels where the current pushes plankton and the plankton pulls everything else. Manta cleaning stations in Baa Atoll from May to November, whale sharks in South Ari year-round, and grey reef sharks stacked in the blue on almost every channel dive. Boats here tend to be roomier than the Egyptian fleet, usually with a separate dhoni that carries tanks and gear so the mothership stays uncluttered.

When to go

Highlighted months are when the diving is worth the airfare. Outside them, boats either do not sail or the conditions stop justifying the trip.

Before you book

Channel dives run current and negative entries. Reef hooks are standard kit. Not the place for a first liveaboard.
